Luke 4: 1-13

(Luke 4: 1-13) And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,  Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.  If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:  For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:  And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.  And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
Why did Satan tempt Jesus? Should Jesus be tempted? Jesus is the Son of Man born of the Son of man. Thus, Jesus must be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Bible says in Hebrews (4:15).For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Through the test of Jesus, the Bible shows that those who are united with Christ will be tempted the same. Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

The wilderness is where the Israelites wandered for 40 years. The wilderness is where there is no water. The wilderness means the world. Israel wandered for 40 years because they did not believe God's promises before the land of Canaan. Twelve men who went to spy on Canaan spy out for 40 days, but ten spies do not believe in God's promise that "go into Canaan and die", so God counts one year a day and counts 40 days of spying for 40 years. God has made them wander in the wilderness. Jesus' hunger for 40 days indicates that people who did not enter Canaan wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.

The 40 days of Jesus' hunger (40 years in the wilderness) represent the world until he comes again. Just as the people of Israel did not have the bread of life in the wilderness, the last time Jesus would come again after ascension, the world would be hungry because there was no word of God in the world. The Bible says in Matthew (24: 37-39).

But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

There is the word of God, but people are not eating it. The Bible says in Amos (8: 11-12).Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. What Jesus starved for 40 days is that those who have left God are hungry for the Word of God. In the wilderness there is the word of God, but it all means hunger. The Israelites complained that there was no meat to eat, even though there was a manna coming down from heaven. Jesus died on the cross for all mankind, and people do not eat and drink the flesh and blood of Jesus. Unless you are united with the death of Jesus, you have not eaten the food of life.

Satan's purpose in tempting Jesus is not to do work on the cross. There is a law (the law of wrath) that no other word of God is needed. Because there is a building temple, people can go to God as much as they can. Satan says that this world is his kingdom because Jesus gave it to him. Jesus fulfilled the law by dying on the cross. Thus, even those who are in Christ are dead to the law. The way out of Satan's temptation is to die with Jesus in the law. Since Jesus is the temple, those who are in Christ are also temples. Jesus told us not to love the world. Therefore, those who died with Jesus died for the world. Satan is aiming at these three things. The reason why Jesus is tempted by the devil is to show Satan's manipulative technique to those who are united with Christ. Jesus tells the people what Satan is looking for. Jesus also speaks through the Lord's Prayer.

In the wilderness there is no water of life. Those who believe the law as the word of life will have no water of life. Even though we say that we are saved by believing in Jesus, we still believe in the law so that there is no water of life. Many church people are deceived by Satan. Today, people are eating stones by making them into loaves. Many people think of regeneration as a change of heart. But regeneration is the rebirth of the spirit body. To do this, we must die on the cross with Jesus. But people act on the law, looking at whether they sin or not, teaching that they must always live repentantly. There is no word of life. If our old man does not die, nothing will happen.

Many people today refer to church buildings as temples, but few seem to realize that "born again is a temple." Do not throw away the idea of meeting God in the church. So Satan drives Jesus down from the top of the temple. Because Jesus is the temple, Satan makes people think that when Jesus comes down from the building temple, people can still meet God in the temple building. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians (3:16).Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him,Miracles will happen. People love miracles. Satan uses this. The Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign, but Jesus said that he had nothing to show but Jonah's sign. It is to repent through Jonah's signs. Those who believe in miracles are those who do not believe the Word until the miracle takes place. Satan is trying to bring miracles to the fall of the chosen, if possible.

Since God says that He loved the world so much, what big problem is that humans also love the world? Some may say. The Bible tells us in 1 John that God should not love the world because Satan is the master. Nevertheless, even many church people are seeking the things of the world. The Devil's third tempt is the same.
