Luke 2: 41-52
(Luke 2: 41-52)
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
It happened when Jesus was 12 years old. He went to Jerusalem on the Passover, where his parents lost the young Jesus. Their parents went back to Jerusalem to look for Jesus, and after three days they found it again, "Why did you do this to us?"
Mary's rebuke is that why didn't you tell us that we would be in the temple?
Jesus' answer is a question of surprise. “Why did you find me? Did you not know that I should be in my father's house?” Young Jesus' answer is that the Father is God. Wouldn't it be natural for a son to be in his father's house, the temple? However, he is so worried for me and is saying that he would have found me soon if he had just come to the temple rather than looking for so much.
It is not new to Mary that Jesus is the Son of God. Mary did not fully understand that Jesus was the Son of God. She becomes fully aware only after Jesus' resurrection. Even when Jesus cast out demons and healed the sick, she thought that Jesus was possessed by demons, and came to Jesus with Jesus' brothers. Jesus said, “But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. 』
Jesus' parents did not understand what Jesus said. Parents would not have been wandering in search of children for three days if they had already realized. They would have gone right to the temple. Because Jesus is the Son of God, he deserves to be in the temple, and that is not strange. However, the temple in Jerusalem was completely destroyed around A.D. 70. The temple that Jesus speaks of, the father's house, is himself. Jesus, the temple, died on the cross.
『And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. 』It is very natural for one's wisdom to grow and grow taller. However, it is true that difficulties arise when this passage is applied to Jesus, the Son of God. Because the child Jesus must surely know that his identity is the Son of God. It is about the wisdom of Jesus as God and the wisdom of Jesus as a man. How can those who are recognized as the Son of God grow in wisdom?
The Bible clearly shows that Jesus is the Son of God, but He is the Son of Man. So, it shows that Jesus was the carpenter's son before his public life. In Mark 6:3, ``Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. Jews in the synagogue are saying that Jesus was not Mary's son the carpenter. Therefore, it is explained that Jesus grew up well and lived as a carpenter following his father's profession. And he was the eldest son, a large family with four brothers and several sisters.
