Luke 10: 38-42

(Luke 10: 38-42)

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.  And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.  But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.  And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:  But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Jesus and his companions entered the village of Bethai. Martha took Jesus to her house. My sister, Mary, sat at Jesus' feet, and her sister Martha was busy getting food to serve Jesus. Martha did not work, but came to Jesus and asked for help.

came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. Jesus was the lifesaver who saved his brother Lazarus, who had died. Martha was busy making food. By the way, her brother Mary is sitting near Jesus' feet, not thinking of helping Martha. Martha was forced to go to Jesus and talk to him.

Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:. But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. The object of this word is Martha and Mary, but these two refer not only to Martha and Mary as natural persons, but to both religious types. First, Martha is a member of the world. She is a person who is anxious and worried about many things. Jesus said that Mary chose one good thing.

Mary will not be deprived of her choice. The reason Maria was able to sit there without worrying about people who were busy with kitchen work was because she knew what was really good for her. Mary says nothing, just sitting at the feet of Jesus and listening to the Word. Through the fact that Mary "sat at the feet of the Lord and listened to the words of the Lord," she was realizing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior. When Mary was focused solely on the word of the Lord, she was focused on the salvation of the spirit.
