Luke 10: 25-37

(Luke 10: 25-37)

And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?  He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?  And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.  And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.  And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.  But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

A teacher of the law asked Jesus, "Teacher, what must I do to gain eternal life?" Regarding the teacher's question, Jesus asks again what the law says about this. The lawyer replied, quoting Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18, saying, ``It is to love God with all your might and love your neighbors as your own body.'' Jesus said, "Your answer is correct, do it, and you will live." There is a lot of difference between what the lawyer thinks and what Jesus says.

Law teachers thought that if they strictly followed the law, they loved God. However, Jesus is trying to keep the law and realize that he is a sinner who cannot keep himself completely. It is the same with neighbors as their own bodies. This is to inform your neighbors. So, we must realize together, discover Christ, and be saved.

The teacher of the law asked again, proudly boasting that he had a deep knowledge of the law, ``Who is my neighbor?'' Would have done it. Jesus spoke of who my neighbor was in the parable of a robber. The lawyers and other Jews who were listening to Jesus' parable would not have expected the Samaritans to appear.
After the priests and Levites had passed, of course the common Jews would have had to appear.

The Samaritans were like Gentiles to the Jews. By the way, when Jesus spoke about the priests and the Levites, he ended it with a very short word. Jesus said that they "looked and fleeed." But when he speaks of the Samaritan, it is very detailed. The Samaritan felt sorry for the man he had met. He treated and cared for the person in the best way he could.

And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. In addition, the Samaritan spent the night there, giving two denarions to the owner of the inn, asking for more care of the injured person. He said he would pay it back when he came home from work if it cost more. He gave love that could not be done without family.
This parable means that salvation will pass to the Gentiles. So, this parable reminds us that saving the dead spirit is so important.

After telling the parable of the Samaritan, this is a question Jesus asked the lawyer. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves? The lawyer replied, "Of course I am a Samaritan." Then Jesus said, "Go and do the same with you." The law teacher's interest was in who was his neighbor. Jesus' interest was in making the Gentiles neighbors.

In Luke 18:18-30, there is a story of a rich official visiting Jesus. That person also asked Jesus, "What must I do to gain eternal life?" That man was a man who kept the law well from childhood. But when he heard the Lord's saying, "Sell your property, give it to the poor, follow me," he was worried. What Jesus says to the rich young man says that the law cannot be saved, and those who love this world cannot be saved. Only those who are united with Jesus Christ and take up the cross will be saved. Jesus said to deny himself. When Jesus said to the rich young man, "Give all your possessions and follow me," he said, "Do self-denial."
