Luke 22:63-71

(Luke 22:63-71)

And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.  And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?  And many other things blasphemously spake they against him. And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:  And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.  Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.  Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.  And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

The Jewish representatives whom Annas and Caiaphas shared the will of the high priest who wanted to kill Jesus gathered and needed time to mock in advance. When all the members of the Sanhedrin, who had been urgently called at dawn, gathered together, they conspired to kill Jesus in order to lead the trial according to the script that had been set. Luke omitted the account of this section, but Matthew and Mark do so in detail.

(Mt 26:59-68; Mr 14:55-65). They gathered secretly at Caiaphas' high priest's house and seek false evidence to kill Jesus (Matthew 26:59).

It is the search for evidence of blasphemy, the sin that the Jews hate most, worthy of the death penalty. If blasphemy is certain, the Sanhedrin Council can be sentenced to death.

The high priests and the gathered crowd set up many witnesses and earnestly sought evidence of blasphemy. However, the testimony did not agree with each other and suffered difficulties (Mark 14:56). The most plausible testimony is that Jesus said that he would destroy the temple and build another temple in three days (Matthew 26:61). They were going to condemn the holy house of God as blasphemy. However, the testimony spoken by one or two did not agree with each other and was misfired (Mark 14:59).

Caiaphas the high priest got up from his seat and asked Jesus if he had anything to say about these evidences, but Jesus didn't answer anything, and the frustrated high priest asked him straightforwardly. It is a question directly related to blasphemy: "Are you the Son of God? He answered, "You are saying that I am." In John 10:33, people tried to stone him and said that the reason was blasphemy. This is why he said he was a man and he himself was God.

Christ the Israelites expected was a human hero who would overpower the Roman Empire and restore Israel. However, if he speaks of himself as the Son of God, then the one who commits such a serious blasphemy cannot be a hero. He is just a sinner who deserves to be killed. Jesus was not silent. He answered his question indirectly, but clearly. "As you say, I am Christ the Son of God". And immediately he boldly declared, ``Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. (Matthew 26:64)

Jesus finally gave the answer that they heard was blasphemy. No one can sit on the throne of God except God. It is blasphemy for them to say that he will sit at the right hand of that power. So, the high priest said, tearing his clothes in an expression of anger.

Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. (Matthew 26:65)
The angry high priest and his crowd not only sentenced Jesus to death, but also swear words, ridicule, and even violence. Some spit, and some with their fists, others with their palms. Not only religious leaders, but their servants, even those who kept Jesus, took part in beating and cursing Jesus. Regardless of position or rank, they all became one in hitting, hitting, and harassing Jesus. After blindfolding and hitting him, he said, "You are a prophet? Let's guess who the person who hit you once is
he mocked. In addition to this, they poured out numerous swear words on Jesus.
